How panning works

Placing a sound between the speakers

Panning sets how much of a signal goes to the left channel and how much to the right. Your ears read that difference in level as direction, so a sound sent more to the right is heard to the right — even though nothing has physically moved.

It is the simplest tool in mixing and one of the most effective, because two sounds in different places stop competing for the same spot.

Why a mix needs it

When everything is centred, every instrument fights for the same space and the result sounds crowded. Spreading parts out gives each one room without turning anything up. The usual arrangement puts lead vocal, kick, snare and bass in the centre — they carry the song and the energy — and places guitars, keys, backing vocals and percussion out to the sides.

Headphones exaggerate it

On speakers both ears hear both sides, so panning reads as a gentle placement. On headphones each ear hears only its own channel and the same setting sounds far more extreme. Hard left or hard right is a deliberate effect on headphones, not a neutral choice — check any strong panning on speakers before deciding.

Silencing one side

Taking the control fully to one end sends the whole signal there and leaves the other channel empty. That is the quick way to isolate one side of a recording — useful when an interview was recorded with each speaker on their own channel.
