How to cut audio cleanly
Where to place the cut
A click at the edge of a trimmed clip is not a bug in the file — it is the waveform jumping instantly from some non-zero value to silence, and a jump like that is a broadband impulse your speakers reproduce faithfully. Cutting where the waveform crosses zero, or fading the last few milliseconds, removes it.
The practical version: if a trimmed clip clicks at the start or end, nudge the marker a few milliseconds either way.
Ringtones, intros and samples
Most cuts are one of three jobs. A ringtone wants 20-30 seconds of the most recognisable part, usually the chorus. Removing an intro or an advert wants a cut placed in a gap rather than mid-phrase. Pulling a sample out for reuse wants the cut on the beat, so it loops without a stumble.
File size follows length
Audio size is close to proportional to duration, so a five-minute track cut to 30 seconds is roughly a tenth the size. That is worth knowing on a phone, where a folder of full-length files fills storage far faster than the same music trimmed to what you actually use.
Cutting does not improve quality
Trimming removes time, not damage. If the source is a heavily compressed MP3, the part you keep carries exactly the same artefacts it had before. Cut from the best copy you have, and export to WAV if the clip is going into further editing, since each additional MP3 encode loses a little more.
