BPM is how many beats fall in one minute — the pulse you tap your foot to, not how fast the music feels. A dense drum & bass track at 174 BPM and a half-time hip-hop beat at 87 BPM can share the same underlying pulse, which is why a detector will sometimes report double or half of the number you expected. Neither answer is wrong; they are the same tempo counted differently.
The track is reduced to an onset envelope — a curve of where energy suddenly rises, which is where beats are — and that curve is correlated against itself at every spacing between 60 and 180 BPM. The spacing that matches itself most strongly is the tempo. The confidence figure shown alongside is the real strength of that peak, so a low number on a rubato or beatless recording is an honest answer rather than a failure.
Key detection builds a chroma profile — how much of each of the twelve pitch classes the recording contains — and matches it against the Krumhansl-Schmuckler weights for all twenty-four major and minor keys. It is reliable on tonal material and least reliable on drums alone, which contain no pitch to weigh.
Two tracks beat-match when their tempos agree and blend musically when their keys are compatible. Knowing both before you load a set saves the guesswork, and pairs directly with the pitch changer and tempo changer here: find the numbers, then move one track to meet the other.
The analysis runs on the decoded audio inside your browser. There is no upload step, no queue and no file-size limit imposed by a server, because no server is involved.
